LIMINAL KEYS
Maybe music is what words wish to become….
The double bass player Moritz Götzen and Silvana Mammone worked together for the first time on the project Moments of Being, which itself was already a language game on a performative level. Whether in the form of musical improvisation as an answer to philosophical questions or as a piece of music that arose from Virginia Woolf's short story, together with Moritz Götzen and his double bass they explored the inherent potential of a symbiosis of language and sound. When Moritz was then invited to the performance format Nische in the Maschinenhaus Essen two months after the premiere, the two decided to continue the process they had begun in Moments of Being. Finally, their project liminal keys was born, in which they explore the complex connections between language and music, Silvana using her own writing. Exploring text and sound in search of a symbiosis between those two artistic elements, they are striving to create forms of expression and atmospheres that go beyond the mere musicalization of poetry or of putting music into words.
….or have always been.

Underground Vibrations
At Cultura Nova liminal keys were offered the unique opportunity to experiment with and perform their material in the vast and somehow enigmatic empty parking space of Q-park. The audience was invited to join them underground and enter into a poetic landscape of sound and space expanding towards the unknown. In the short rehearsal period of one week in the car park the duo decided together on a set of parameters with which to improvise within this huge reverberating space. The artists wanted the whole of the environment, including the audience, to become part of this space of dim light and expansive sound. Every echo being a moment of profound immersion.
These are three rehearsal recordings from our residency at PAF Performing Arts Forum in StErme, France.
