Life as a bird

copyright Silvana Mammone

Life as a bird

Pushing its feathery chest against the bars

Even if

they never break

they never even bend

Life as the illusion of a storm

throwing the clouds at you

just when your hot breath of exhilaration

blew them away

away for the moon to shine

onto the illusion

of an empty cage

Still

your soul moves through illusion gracefully

briefly

freedom is tangible

always

when your small hand holds on to nothing

Nothing at all

And one bird stretching its wings

cage expanding

with nothing but relief

Bird was a bird is a bird

Illusion flying through its feathers

Elevating

empty cage
