Autumn song
This is a new song I composed, interwoven with a poem of mine, which is written below. Enjoy!
Today, nothing suffices -
Today, is nothing enough?
As I cannot take one single step, or look ahead
wishing the world would approach me, boldly
All these dead birds on my path
do you remember the first you ever saw?
mine was small, pale-blue and delicate
with tiny fluffy feathers drenched in scarlet
All these dead birds on my path
beautiful and horrific -
I swear, I did not shoot them down
I swear, they must have fallen by themselves
on their way to where I’ll never know
why I’ll never know, but know
I'll have to kneel down by their side,
wrap strings and stones around their bones
and lift them up onto my chest
to carry them to the water's edge
All these dead birds forsaken by their sky
I will walk into the water with them
one last moment of weightlessness together
before sinking lightly to the ground unseen
It is a bit like flying, is it not?
they almost spread their wings, and I
should I join their journey of descent?
or journey back from where I came
collecting every single one of my dead birds
While I stand there, undecided
clumsily
a tiny fluffy feather falls before my eyes
playfully
reminds me of the sky, and I
gaze up to spot the bird of prey
drawing circles high above my head
and then
I walk on, abandon both my choices
for birds of prey will always live
beautiful and horrific
