kalihá - It is both easy to say that we are connected to nature, just as it is easy to claim that we are not. But the cultural shift that will be necessary to move away from and transform our exploitative, growth-driven culture is more complicated, partly because it is bound to how humans perceive themselves and their environment. Nature will outlive us. I often say that to myself as a consolation against some dreary landscape, our destructive way of thinking and living. Although there is truth in this sentence, it also harbors a certain cowardice. It paves the way out of our responsibility. To admit with what power and force we have disturbed and destroyed many ecosystems in such a short time and then to say that we are not connected to nature is evasive and also sad. It overlooks our ability to create and maintain and thereby reconnect more strongly with nature. In the worst case, the position that nature does not need us, prevents us from collaboratively (re-)discovering how to live sustainably with and within nature. We think that hitting someone breaks the bond between us. When in truth it gets tighter and tighter until it strangles us both. The same goes for animate nature and ourselves. In addition, such a cynical attitude negates the fact that people, especially indigenous cultures on all continents, have lived in close connection to nature for thousands of years without this relationship taking on such massively self-destructive features. It is often pointed out how destructive humankind has always been, but in the end this paints an undifferentiated picture. The changing of ecosystems through hunting or plant consumption describes complex ecological processes. Acknowledging and understanding the destructive energy of our own animal species is very important. But turning this into fatalism is unacceptable (albeit understandable given that it is simply too late for many necessary changes). But this does not mean that we do not have to fulfill our responsibility individually and as a collective to question and creatively and peacefully redesign our relationship with the earth in all its facets. Or my personality for that matter. I stepped outside being greeted by air, warm and soft and smelling wonderfully. I made a silly joke saying: “I am air. I am done!” turning quickly back to the barn door. Of course then I did go for my walk to find the more that human species I was going to turn into. And the air did not leave me, intrigued me rather. I am air, yes! I want to be air. I am O2, CO2, N2. I am already a symbiosis. And I am traveling, traveling, traveling. The sun moves me, literally, all the time. I stroke every surface I pass, inter-acting, changing, being changed.
